A reaction to an increasingly industrialized world, the Arts & Crafts Movement celebrated artisans and the handmade. Boston was a major center of the movement, home to one of the nation’s first Arts & Crafts societies, founded in 1897. Bostonians excited by the movement’s ideals learned traditional skills like metalworking, bookbinding, and woodworking. Beacon Hill, with its charmingly old fashioned homes, drew these makers as a place to live and create.
